What is Social Media

Social Media in a business context involves interacting with customers by sharing news, offers, videos and images for marketing reasons. Having a strong identity in Social Media has become a must for anyone trying to run an online business.  Potential customers use social media as a way of validating your services, your philosophy and authority about a given subject. If used RIGHT social media can bring huge benefits to your business.

The key players.

Facebook:  is a popular free social networking website which allows registered users to have conversations with customers, post photos and videos, promote special offers and industry news. This is a truly international website which is available in 80 different languages.

Twitter: is a social networking website that allows registered users to follow people they know or who they are interested in and to comment (tweet) on people tweets and events as they are happening in the world.

LinkedIn: is a social networking site which is a bit like Facebook but is for business users. It allows you to post content, images and videos and is a great way to virtually network to invited people within the business the community.

Google’s + 1: is the new competitor to Facebook and Twitter, it allows people who are logged in to upload and share photo’s, videos, links, opinions and recommendations to their followers. Google+ uses “circles”  to group people which allows you to post specific things to particular groups.

YouTube: is a popular website which hosts videos which people can upload, watch, share and comment on.  Great for doing product reviews and guides.

Instagram: is a website that allows registered users to take pictures and videos then choose a filter to transform the images before sharing them with followers

Pintrest:  is a very popular image based social network website which allows users to PIN images or videos and add them to pintrest board that leads back to the site where it was found.

Finally before you begin using social media, have a plan and decide which one fits your business goals.  Vary your content to make sure it is interesting and of value to your customers and keep it up to date
